THE MORNING LIST
A few days before the Flames ceremony, created in 2023 to reward “popular cultures”, the World Culture service takes an overview of the main artists nominated. This fourth edition, which will take place on Thursday April 23 in the evening at La Seine musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt, will again cover a wide musical spectrum ranging from rap to new pop through R’n’B, to African or Caribbean music. We have selected seven categories among the twenty-five awards which will be awarded during the evening, in the form of predictions or favorites.
Rap album of the year: Bantu lyricist Youssoupha
“Best rap album of the year” is the flagship category of the Flames ceremony. The year 2025 will have been rich in events, tragic like the brutal death of Werenoi, whose album Diamant noir competes here, but also in surprising returns like that of La Fouine, with his Capitale du crime. Volume 2 recorded with the young guard of French rap, or the maintenance at the top of the “Bantu lyricist”, Youssoupha. Faced with La Mano 1.9 and Timar, this is our preference.
Supreme Love is one of the best albums of his career. Recorded with a symphony orchestra and a gospel choir, it contains two songs which pay tribute to the women in his life without falling into the conventional and clichéd remarks of his colleagues. Dieu est grande, with a provocative title, is a rap addressed to her daughter, which reassures, comforts and encourages her. Gigi is an ode to his wife, for whom he settled in Ivory Coast. There are still no female MCs in the rap albums of the year, but they can count on Youssoupha, Shay’s uncle, to make them more visible.
