The first woman to lead Italy, the president of the council Giorgia Meloni worries and intrigues. It also inspires documentary filmmakers. After Giorgia Meloni and the Gull Clan, produced in 2024 and broadcast on Arte at the start of the year, The Meloni Case seems designed to take over, opening with its accession to power, in October 2022, following the electoral success (September 25), of its post-fascist party Fratelli d’Italia. “Should we be afraid? », asks the narrator Anne Rodier.
To answer this question, the film cannot avoid a return to the rise of the female politician, but through an original approach. The first part of the film opens with a road trip in author Anna Bonalume’s Vespa through the streets of Rome, meeting former residents of the working-class Garbatella district where it all “may have” started.
With the support of Italian presenter Myrta Merlino, the film attempts a psychological explanation of the commitment of teenage Giorgia. Mocked at school, for example, she would have sought to join a clan: it will be the neofascist party MSI (Italian Social Movement) at the age of 15, in 1992. Likewise, the film explains her need for “strong men [qui] become his benchmarks”, from Benito Mussolini to the “flamboyant” Sylvio Berlusconi, via Gianfranco Fini, founder of the Alleanza Nazionale party (1995-2009) and his mentor.
