Russia: five dead and thousands evacuated during floods caused by heavy rains

At least five people have died in floods caused by heavy rains in southern Russia, and thousands more have been evacuated, authorities said.

Videos shared on social networks show villages under water and submerged roads after very intense rainfall which hit Dagestan, a Russian republic in the Caucasus, this weekend.

One of the sequences shows the collapse of part of a multi-story residential building in the regional capital Makhachkala, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

At least two cars were swept away by the floods, killing four people, including three children, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation announced.

More rain expected

Another person died in a landslide, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Some water treatment plants had to be shut down due to power outages, according to local authorities.

Rescuers are continuing their work as more rain is expected, the ministry said.

Floods already hit Dagestan last week, causing widespread power cuts and prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in the region.
