Fuel prices: consumption down sharply in April in France, according to Bercy

An Auchan service station in Louvres (Val-d'Oise), April 8, 2026.

French consumption of road fuels recorded a sharp drop of 11% year-on-year in April, reflecting “an adaptation of behavior” in the face of soaring prices at the pump in the context of the energy crisis linked to the war in the Middle East, the Ministry of the Economy announced on Wednesday May 6.

“We are entering a period of adaptation of behavior,” Bercy explained to Agence France-Presse (AFP). With the surge in gasoline and diesel prices, the French are starting to slow down on their travels.

Consumption for the month of April fell by 11% compared to the month of April 2025, after a month of March up 2%, notably marked by a strong surge in precautionary purchases at the pump in the first weeks of the conflict (+ 24% in consumption from March 11 to 20, 2026 over one year), according to figures from French customs and communicated on Wednesday by Bercy.

The price of gasoline in France reached a record on Wednesday since the start of the war in the Middle East, at 2.038 euros on average per liter of SP95-E10 and 2.123 euros for that of SP98, according to an AFP calculation carried out on the prices reported by more than 7,000 stations to a government site, while diesel remained at high levels, at 2.227 euros per liter.
