April 13, 1986. Forty years ago, John Paul II went to the great synagogue in Rome (Italy), on the banks of the Tiber. The initiative comes from the pope and was accepted by Elio Toaff, chief rabbi of Rome from 1951 to 2001. Now, for the first time in history, a pope is received in a Jewish place of worship.
