2027 presidential election: Renaissance activists largely in favor of nominating Gabriel Attal as party candidate

Gabriel Attal’s candidacy has reached a new stage. The majority of Renaissance activists expressed themselves in favor of a nomination of their presidential candidate by the national council followed by a vote by members, the party reported on Monday May 4.

Two historic leaders of the Macronist party, Jean-Marc Borello and Bariza Khiari, presented to the executive office their conclusions regarding the nomination of the candidate for the presidential election. At the end of two months of consultations, the two officials reported that 70% of the activists consulted were in favor of a nomination of the candidate followed by a vote, 15% for an internal primary and 15% for an open primary.

The executive board of Renaissance meeting Monday evening therefore decided (by 60 votes in favor, 3 abstentions, and none opposing) to submit to the national council two options: the designation of the general secretary, Gabriel Attal, as party candidate, “if he decided to present himself, in accordance with the largely majority will” of the activists, or the organization of an internal primary, “although this is only supported by a minority of members and executives” of the party.

Signings and meetings

The national council will meet on May 12 to give its decision. If he opts for a nomination of Gabriel Attal, this will be submitted, within the following ten days, to a vote by members up to date with contributions.

In the statutes, the choice of the method of designation falls to the national council, chaired by Elisabeth Borne, who was not present at the office on Monday. The former prime minister has increased the signs of distancing towards Gabriel Attal, whose candidacy for the Elysée is beyond doubt. Minister Aurore Bergé was present, and represented the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, at the office.

Without having officially declared himself a candidate, Gabriel Attal gave every sign that he was preparing for the election. He published a book on April 23 and has since been traveling extensively, for signings and meetings, before a large Parisian gathering on May 30.

In his book, En homme libre (Editions de l’Observatoire), the 37-year-old former prime minister recounts at length the dissolution of the National Assembly by Emmanuel Macron, in 2024, which he experienced from Matignon: it was “one of the most disastrous political decisions of the Fifth Republic”, he writes. Since then, the deputy from Hauts-de-Seine has taken over the presidential party, Renaissance, as well as the group in the Assembly, focused without internal competition towards his presidential design.
