YouTube: you will finally be able to break the algorithm thanks to this new function

YouTube announces a new way to get video recommendations. While the homepage algorithm offers you content based on your viewing history, YouTube has decided to give you a little more leeway by launching a “personalized feed”.

YouTube gives you control (or almost)

Like everything presented by Google recently, the new system is based on entering prompts, that is to say instructions written in natural language that artificial intelligence interprets, here to assemble a list of videos likely to please you. Concretely, a button entitled “Your personalized feed” appears at the top of the home page, on mobile and computer. Clicking on it takes you to a text box where you can type your query. In its presentation of the tool, YouTube gives a few examples: “help me unwind after work with guided meditations of less than 10 minutes” or “offer me something different from my usual flow”. Pre-filled suggestions are also offered to make it easier to get started.

Once created, this feed is constantly refreshed with new content. You can obviously modify your prompt at any time to instantly generate a new flow. The latter can also be pinned to the top of the interface for quick access, alongside the other categories.

Who can benefit from it?

For now, this feature is reserved for users residing in the United States, who use the English interface, and who have activated their search and viewing history in their Google account settings. Early adopters find that the results produced by artificial intelligence are not always very relevant to previously viewed videos. To compensate for these early errors, YouTube has integrated a system to collect opinions and refine the precision of the results.

Why does YouTube offer such a feature?

Google already knows almost everything about your life and the YouTube feed is already very good at detecting upcoming videos that you might like. But by offering a personalization tool, the platform will be able to go even further thanks to the explicit requests you make. We thus move from passive consumption dictated by the algorithm to active consumption which asks you to formulate what you want to see. Enough to feed YouTube’s AI a little more and refine user profiling.
